GEO
Foundation hires education veteran to
oversee charter schools
Former principal, teacher brings nearly 30 years of
education experience
INDIANAPOLIS –
Greater Educational Opportunities Foundation
announced today the hiring of Bill Herman as the
organization’s new vice president and director of
schools. Herman, who served the last 13 years as the
principal of St. Monica Catholic School, will
oversee GEO Foundation’s four 21st
Century Charter Schools.
“Bill brings
years of education excellence to GEO,” said Kevin
Teasley, GEO Foundation’s president and CEO. “His
experience in growing a school with a diverse
population – racially and socio-economically – while
achieving high academic results brings tremendous
value to all our schools’ families and students.”
Herman helped to
grow St. Monica from 265 students to 520 students,
while still maintaining academic excellence. In
2006, St. Monica received “Blue Ribbon” distinction
from the U.S. Department of Education. The award
honors schools that are either academically superior
in their states – including test scores in the top
10 percent – or demonstrate dramatic gains in
student achievement. St. Monica was also selected as
an Indiana Exemplary School.
“GEO schools are
having significant impact in all the communities in
which they serve,” said Herman. “By providing
learning tailored for each child, students are
progressing at astounding levels. This is an
opportunity of a lifetime, and I look forward to
helping GEO excel in bringing more educational
options to more children.”
Prior to his
tenure as principal, Herman spent 15 years teaching
middle-school social studies at Noblesville Jr. High
School and St. Monica. He was honored numerous times
for teaching excellence. In addition, Herman served
as the president of the Archdiocesan Principals
Association from 2002 to 2006.
Herman holds a
B.S. in secondary education from
Indiana University, a M.S. in K-12 special education
from Butler University and a principal’s
certification from Butler University.
