A big thanks to all who attended “A Celebration of Achievement”, a Dinner Honoring David Harris’ contribution to Indianapolis’ charter schools. The dinner was a success and was only possible because of your support.
Dinner Held to Commemorate the Leadership of David Harris
The evening featured performances from students at Christel House Academy as well as speakers and an award presentation to Harris, who was instrumental in the passage of charter law in Indiana. Harris expressed his gratitude to the school leaders and others involved in starting the charter school movement in Indiana. After 5 years with charter legislation in our state, there are now 36 charter schools in the state and 16 are sponsored by the only authorizing Mayor in the nation. The initiative has become nationally recognized including a prestigious award from Harvard University. Chester Finn, President of the Fordham Foundation said of the recent Accountability Report issued by the Mayor, “The significant point from our perspective, however, isn’t how the Mayor’s schools are doing so much as that he and his expert helpers have developed a superb accountability model for charter schools at a time when that issue is on everybody’s mind.”
Letters and proclamations were read on behalf of those not present, including Mayor Peterson, Lynne Weisenbach, Carol D’Amico and Sejal Doshi. Keynote Speaker was Morgan Brown, US Department of Education’s Assistant Deputy Secretary of Innovation and Improvement, who flew in for the event. Photos from the evening are available at www.geofoundation.org.
