If there were an award for the hardest-working high school student in Gary,

Brandon Thomas-Pleasant, 18, would be a prime candidate.

Thomas-Pleasant is a high school senior at the 21st Century Charter Schools in Gary and also attends Ivy Tech Community College Northwest and Indiana University Northwest.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard will address the 2009 Indiana Public Charter School Conference during breakfast on April 29. Ballard, the only mayor in the nation with the authority to authorize new charter schools, will discuss academic expectations for charter school students and how college preparation is the road to success for the city and state.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett will address the hundreds of attendees at the 2009 Indiana Public Charter School Conference during lunch on April 29. Bennett will explore the important role charter schools play in the state’s education system, as well as charter school initiatives to provide opportunities for students to earn college credits while still in high school.

The 2009 Indiana Public Charter School Conference will be held April 29 at the Indiana Convention Center. Nearly all of the state’s charter school principals, board members and service providers will be in attendance as the conference explores several areas – academic performance, succession to college, tools for successful schools, and legal issues – surrounding the state’s charter schools.

“I’m not wedded to the idea of a school, but rather the idea of cathedrals of learning,” said Mayor Cory Booker today to a diverse crowd in Indianapolis of more than 150 legislators, educators, business owners, and philanthropists. “Instead of focusing on seat time, we need to be focused on achievement.”

Pikes Peak Community College and the Pikes Peak Prep have signed a collaborative agreement establishing a first-of-its-kind partnership, allowing the charter school to rent and conduct classes at the PPCC Downtown Studio Campus.

Pikes Peak Prep is the first K-12 charter school in the country to have signed such an agreement with a college to begin a Middle College program.
