INDIANAPOLIS STAR:

Local group expands charter school services

By Andy Gammill

The Greater Educational Opportunities Foundation, the Indianapolis charter school advocacy group, will begin contracting with charter schools to manage their business operations, GEO President Kevin Teasley said. Schools will be able to contract with GEO to handle accounting, human resources, compliance with local and state laws, technology and other "back-office" work.

Several groups organizing charter schools will use the service, including proposals coming forward from former IPS principals Gregory Allen and Jeffery C. White, Teasley said. Several existing charter schools are exploring the possibility of contracting with GEO for those services.

Teasley said the potential savings could be substantial to schools. Charter schools will be able to reach economies of scale by, for example, having a larger group for insurance. And schools that would have each had to hire accountants could benefit by having one that does the work for all of them.

Indianapolis-based GEO operates a charter school service center that provides services to charter schools and also runs charter schools in Indianapolis, Gary and Colorado.
